The African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) organized an Africa Water & Sanitation Sector Monitoring Training Workshop in collaboration with the African Union Commission, hosted by the Government of Ghana 2 – 5 May 2017. Focus of the workshop was the newly launched Africa Monitoring and Reporting System, developed by AMCOW with technical assistance from DHI in partnership with UNEP (link to portal).

Rasmus Eskerod Borgstrøm, Managing Director of DHI GRAS, gave a presentation highlighting the benefits of using Earth Observation to monitor water resources through an introduction to the EO4SD Water project. Besides increasing the awareness of EO in support of Water Resource management, the presentation focused on specific linkages between EO products and SDG6 indicators.

The presentation was well received by the participating African member states and institutions as well as the relevant UN institutions present at the workshop. The following discussion and feedback confirmed mutual agreement towards further exploration of the opportunities with EO, as well as looking further into how to overcome some of the challenges of applying EO for SDG6 monitoring.
